How does body radiofrequency work?
Skin firmness, cellulite appearance, texture: radiofrequency is one of the best-documented non-invasive technologies. How does it heat tissue, and what can you expect?
In short
Radiofrequency passes a very high-frequency alternating current (in the megahertz range) through tissue, which heats up as it resists the current. This controlled heating causes collagen contraction and a repair response that can improve skin firmness over a course of sessions.
The physics
At these frequencies, current does not cause muscle contraction; its energy turns into heat in the tissue it crosses. Configurations include monopolar, bipolar and multipolar, each spreading heat differently.
Why heat firms the skin
Two phenomena are described [1]: immediate contraction of collagen fibres under heat, and a delayed repair response stimulating new collagen and elastin over several weeks. That is why protocols span several sessions.
The role of frequency
Penetration depth is an inverse function of frequency: the lower the frequency, the deeper the energy tends to act [2]. Multi-frequency devices such as AdipoXtrem (1 MHz, 2 MHz and 3 MHz) allow settings to be adapted to the area and goal.
Radiofrequency and cellulite
Cellulite has multiple causes, with fibrous septa linking skin to deeper tissue playing a central role [3]. A 2023 review places radiofrequency among the best-documented non-invasive options for moderate cellulite, while noting heterogeneous studies [4].
